Brighton Art - Fair I was at this art fair in September 2010.
I am a professional artist exhibiting both as an individual and in collaboration with other artists and writers, especially within the collaborative group InPrint.
Working mainly on paper I draw quite spontaneously, allowing imagery to emerge with little conscious interference. The drawings are inspired by my own rich visual language, and are deeply concerned with the ideas of the life force, with especial reference to maternal themes. I work in bold, colourful forms creating intense layers of pattern and imagery. There are also lots of images of nature and especially trees, leaves and animals. I exhibit paintings, mixed media drawings and limited edition relief prints, collographs and etchings, they can be currently seen at Craft Co. in Southwold, and Harleston Gallery in Harleston, Norfolk, and The Cork Brick Gallery in Bungay.
Along with the painter and printmaker Diane Griffiths, I am exploring the ideas of creation, generation, symbolism and myth associated with medieval bestiaries. Their colourful and lavish illustrations, a strange mix of the naturalistic and the surreal, are centred on seeking the connections between man, creatures and the environment.
Diane is particularly inspired by the medieval form of the book and a major part of her work is a series of images in the tradition of wood engravings, accompanying a mythical rewriting of the story of the Flood. These are presented both individually and as a large artist-book.
I have transferred some of my hand-carved linocut motifs from paper to fabric, making bags and silk scarves using the same traditional methods of ink rolling and printing through a press, making each item individually hand-printed.
The scarves are currently on sale on the internet shop Etsy and at Craft Co. in Southwold, Ethika in Norwich, the Harleston Gallery in Harleston, Norfolk or by contacting me.
